Arthur & Arthur

Arthur III’s love for horses and music were pretty evenly matched right out of the chute. Arthur and I met in Nashville at a jam session at Ireland’s, a restaurant that supported bluegrass, that strange breed of thoroughbred music. I was just joining Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys at that time and Arthur was at Vanderbilt. We hit it off and spent hours picking and singing our original songs to each other over at my one room shack by the railroad tracks.

Arthur went on to start his own racehorse breeding and training operation at his own Stone Farm and it was there that I first met young Arthur Hancock IV. Charles Sawtelle and I picked with the two Arthurs until the wee hours. Charles looked at me and nodded in young Arthur’s direction, “He’s got the fire!” The horses and the music were running neck and neck.

Now the two Arthurs have joined their love of bluegrass music with inspiring family harmonies and original songwriting. It’s neck and neck at the far turn, give ‘em the bridle boys and let her run! Horses and music. Romance of the reins.

"Beyond being father and son, the musical connection that Arthur and Arthur share is deep and magical. Together they embody the family tradition that is at the heart of bluegrass music and there’s no one who does that tradition prouder than these two Kentuckians. I was honored to produce their first duo recording and hope you’ll enjoy listening to the music as much as we enjoyed making it."

"I became friends with Arthur III in 1964 when I was playing at Martin’s in Lexington and he would get up and sing a few songs. I met Arthur IV in 2000 at the studio recording Sunday Silence. I really like the selection of songs they picked here; of course the ones Arthur III wrote. I especially like their version of Little Willie. These guys do their own brand of music and the musicians are top notch. If you like good acoustic music, I recommend this CD. You guys did good."

"To make a record with my father is something I will cherish forever. I thank Allison so much for her friendship and guidance. Thank you to the band for picking, most importantly to Jason Carter for wrangling our heroes; My mother for loving us both so selflessly; All of my family, The Wooks, Della Mae, Tom Mullinix, Dave Lee, Town Mountain, Aaron Truesdell, and George Gatewood. Thank you Dad for showing me this music and to all of you for listening."
- Arthur Hancock IV
"Thanks to Allison for the arrangements for these songs and thanks to the wonderful musicians for bringing them to life. I have always thought that a song has it’s own personality and feeling, be it happy, sad, bright or cloudy, and these master pickers have captured the mood for each of these songs. Thank you Arthur for getting everyone together for this project and for the good banjo pickin’ and close harmony. I am proud of you my son."
